Resources for Schools

Most educators understand that physical and mental health concerns for students must be addressed if their classrooms and schools are to function optimally and students are to achieve the success they deserve.

We know that a variety of psychosocial and health problems affect learning and performance in profound ways.  When students internalize the effects of performing poorly at school and are punished for the misbehavior that commonly accompanies school failure, things often get worse.  What may

not always be clear is what Aurora Mental Health Center can do to help.

Fortunately, most educators do all that they can to assure that students'

needs are met.  But with the ever increasing focus on academic accountability, many teachers and other school professionals are recognizing that they can’t do it alone.

Linkages between schools and community service agencies are ever more important to address barriers to school success and generally enhance the well-being of students and their families.  Aurora Mental Health Center has the ability and the mission to work with you to help your students achieve their true potential.

Some Important Facts You Might Want To Know
Serious emotional and mental disorders in children are real.  One in five of the children in your classroom will meet the criteria for a mental health disorder during this school year.  For half of them, the effects will be severe.  It may surprise you to learn that half of all lifetime mental health problems start before the age of 14.

Common symptoms of mental health concerns that you may notice in students include:

  • Attendance problems, lack of school attachment, school refusal
  • Decline in academic performance
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Hyperactivity or excessive fidgeting
  • Depression, sadness, or irritability
  • Social difficulties
  • Evidence of family conflict
  • Constant worry or anxiety
  • Persistent nightmares
  • General emotional upset
  • Continuous or frequent oppositional behavior
  • Angry or violent outbursts

Only one in five of the children in your class who need mental health treatment will receive the care they need.  Untreated mental health problems can disrupt children’s functioning at home, school and in the community.  Without treatment, children with mental health issues are at increased risk of school failure, contact with the criminal justice system, dependence on social services, and even suicide.  Grade-school children with serious emotional disturbances have the highest rates of school failure.  Fifty percent of these students drop out of high school, compared to 30 percent of all students with disabilities.  Lack of necessary care may be due to a need for more information, to problems accessing care, to problems paying for care, or to the stigma and shame that children and families may experience.

Treatment Works!
Early identification, diagnosis and treatment can help children reach their full potential, in school and in life.  Psychotherapy, behavioral interventions, psychopharmacology and other interventions have been demonstrated to be effective for many childhood disorders.  Untreated, these disorders can lead

to devastating consequences for children.
